Ep. 46 Halloween, Spiritual Discernment & Standing Firm in Christ
Should we celebrate Halloween? Should we avoid it, stay home, or find a way to redeem the day? These are questions so many faithful families wrestle with every October, and this week I want to talk through them thoughtfully: not from fear, and not from legalism, but through the lens of Scripture.
In this solo episode I share a little of Halloween's history, why we need biblical discernment as new age spirituality and progressive Christianity grow more popular, and how October can become an opportunity to shine Christ's light. I also share a remarkable story of redemption from my own church, two books that deepened my understanding of spiritual warfare, and an encouragement for every woman wondering whether her ordinary work at home really matters. It does.
Key Points
The spiritual battle is real, and so is Christ's victory. Today the enemy rarely needs to tempt us with something dramatic. He just has to keep us distracted. But even demons must bow the knee in the presence of Jesus, because the cross settled the battle.
Discernment asks a different question than culture. Culture asks, "What can I get away with?" Scripture asks, "What glorifies Christ?" Test everything, hold fast what is good, and abstain from every form of evil (1 Thessalonians 5:21–22).
Wellness branding can hide spiritual danger. Tarot, astrology, crystals, manifestation and spirit guides are being packaged as self-care. Our guidance comes from the Holy Spirit and the Word of God, not the stars (Deuteronomy 18).
God specializes in redemption. My church purchased the former Spahn Ranch, infamous for the Manson family. A place once associated with darkness now belongs to God's people. Nothing is beyond His redemption.
"Darkness is never overcome by more darkness. It is overcome by light." Gina Romero (16:24)
Actionable Takeaways
Ask one question about October. Whatever your family decides about Halloween, ask: how can our home point people toward Jesus?
Invite five people to a church-hosted fall event. This is our Homemakers Club challenge this month. Trunk-or-treats, harvest festivals and family nights are beautiful ways to shine the light instead of retreating.
Know your Bible. Read it, study it and measure everything against it, from the books we read to the movies our kids watch. Take every thought captive.
Teach your children discernment, not fear. Explain why you make the choices you do. Talk about light and darkness, courage, God's protection and the armor of God. Do your kids know it?
Don't let one holiday steal the whole month. Celebrate the good: hayrides, pumpkin patches, bonfires, warm soups, fresh bread and family dinners. God has woven so much goodness into this season.
The Armor of God (Ephesians 6)
The belt of truth
The breastplate of righteousness
The shoes of the gospel of peace
The shield of faith
The helmet of salvation
The sword of the Spirit, the Word of God. Our armor isn't superstition, lucky charms or rituals. It is God-given.
