Ep. 49 Building a Legacy of Faith with Kathy Dye
How do you build a legacy of faith that outlasts you, while you're still packing lunches and chasing down the lost matching sock? This week I sit down with Kathy Dye: speaker, author, Bible study teacher, and a retired elementary teacher with 29 years in the classroom.
Kathy shares the story behind her upcoming Bible study, The Song of Our Heart, which grew out of singing old hymns with her mother through Alzheimer's. We talk about Psalm 71, finding quiet time with God as a busy mom, why our kids learn more from how we live than from what we say, and how the everyday work of homemaking is an act of worship.
Key Points
God is the true song of our heart. Kathy's mom could still sing hymns when she no longer recognized her family. That became the seed for a study on how David, Moses and Isaiah each called God their song and their strength.
Psalm 71 is a legacy psalm. An older believer looks back on a lifetime with God and asks to proclaim His praises to the next generation. Its three themes: God is our refuge, our hope, and the reason for our praise.
Homemaking is worship. Washing clothes, getting dinner on the table and rubbing a little one's head at bedtime is kingdom work when we do it for the glory of God.
Kids watch more than they listen. Church and Bible stories matter, but how we respond, how we talk about others and how we care for people speaks loudest.
"Being the mother to those children, washing their clothes, having their food ready, is a spiritual act of worship." Kathy Dye (15:33)
Actionable Takeaways
Guard a few quiet minutes with God every day. It doesn't need to be a big chunk of time. Trade off with a friend, ask your husband for a break, or use a church Mother's Day Out.
Find a mentor. Look for an older, godly woman you trust, and ask people to pray for you.
Try the S.O.N.G. method this week. Kathy's four-step way to sit with a single verse (below).
Elevate one ordinary thing. Set the store-bought veggie tray on a bed of romaine on a real platter. Two extra seconds, two extra dollars, served from a heart of hospitality (Romans 12:13).
Turn everyday moments into faith lessons. A ball over the neighbor's fence is a chance to teach that every person has a story.
The S.O.N.G. Method
S is for Scripture. Write the verse out in the version you love.
O is for Observation. Read the verses before and after. Where does it fit?
N is for Nest. Settle into it. What does it mean to you?
G is for Growth. How can it help your walk with God?
